How Assistive Technology Supports Students with ADHD, Learning Disabilities, and Executive Function Challenges

Updated: Jul 7

What Is Assistive Technology for Students?

Have you ever wondered how technology can make learning easier, more engaging, and more accessible? That’s exactly what assistive technology (AT) does! While we often associate technology with entertainment—like streaming shows or scrolling through social media—it also plays a huge role in academic success, especially for students with learning disabilities or ADHD.

As part of my PhD research on assistive technology and learning outcomes, I explore how students use technology to enhance their education. One of my biggest takeaways?

Assistive technology isn’t just for students with diagnosed learning differences—it’s for anyone who wants to learn more effectively.

Benefits of Assistive Technology in Education

At its core, assistive technology includes any tool or device that helps students learn better. This can range from speech-to-text software for notetaking, to organization apps, to audiobooks for learning on the go. The best assistive technology tools for students are:

✅ Easy to use

✅ Accessible and intuitive

✅ Aligned with a student’s needs and preferences

If a student already enjoys using their iPad or smartphone, the goal isn’t to introduce a completely new system—it’s to help them use familiar devices more intentionally to support learning.

Popular Tools That Support ADHD and Executive Functioning

In my experience working with students, many are already using assistive technology without even realizing it. Tools like Grammarly, Google Voice Typing, and built-in screen readers on phones and tablets make studying easier and more efficient—especially for students with ADHD or executive function challenges.

But technology alone isn’t enough. To benefit from these learning tools, students need to:

🔹 Choose tools that match their learning style

🔹 Receive proper guidance and coaching

🔹 Understand the importance of academic integrity, such as avoiding plagiarism

With the right strategies, assistive technology becomes more than a shortcut—it becomes a learning support system.

How Academic Coaching Helps Students Use Technology Effectively

As an academic coach, I help students explore assistive technology options in a way that’s personalized and easy to implement. Whether it’s finding the right note-taking app, using dictation tools to draft essays, or building routines with time-management apps, the focus is always on real-life needs.

Many students with ADHD or learning disabilities struggle with organization, focus, or time blindness. Assistive technology—paired with coaching—can help them build the executive functioning skills they need to succeed.
