What is Assistive Technology?
Have you ever wondered how technology can make learning easier, more engaging, and more accessible? That’s exactly what assistive technology (AT) does! While we often associate technology with entertainment—like streaming shows or scrolling through social media—it also plays a huge role in academic success.
As part of my PhD research on metacognition and learning outcomes, I explore how students use of technology to enhance their education. One of my biggest takeaways?
Assistive technology isn’t just for students with learning differences—it’s for anyone who wants to learn more effectively.
Defining Assistive Technology
At its core, assistive technology includes any tool or device that helps students learn better. This can range from speech-to-text software for note-taking, to organization apps, to audiobooks for learning on the go. The best assistive technology is:
✅ Easy to use
✅ Accessible and intuitive
✅ Aligned with a student’s needs and preferences
For example, if a student already loves using their iPad or smartphone, the goal isn’t to introduce a completely new system—it’s to help them leverage those devices in a way that supports academic success.
How Assistive Technology Boosts Academic Performance
In my experience working with students, I’ve learned something surprising: many of them are already using assistive technology without even realizing it! Tools like Grammarly, Google Docs voice typing, or built-in screen readers on phones and tablets can make studying easier and more effective.
However, technology alone isn’t enough. To truly benefit from assistive tools, students need to:
🔹 Choose the right tools that align with their learning style
🔹 Receive proper guidance on how to use them effectively
🔹 Understand the importance of academic integrity, such as avoiding plagiarism
With the right strategies, assistive technology can transform a student’s learning experience—helping them study smarter, stay organized, and feel more confident in their abilities.
Bringing Assistive Technology into Academic Coaching
One of my goals as an academic coach is to help students navigate the world of assistive technology in a way that feels natural and beneficial. Whether it’s finding the right note-taking app, using dictation software to draft essays, or implementing time-management tools, the key is personalization.
By tailoring technology to a student’s needs, we can make learning feel less overwhelming and more empowering.
