Fear is the Mind Killer: Why Teaching Students how to Learn is a Game-Changer

Updated: Feb 20

Have you ever felt that no matter how hard you study, the information just doesn’t stick? You’re not alone.

As an academic coach, I work with high school and post-secondary students who struggle with school—not just with understanding content, but with figuring out how to learn effectively. That’s why I was so excited to read Fear Is the Mind Killer: Why Learning to Learn Deserves Lesson Time by Dr. James Mannion and Kate McAllister. This book reinforced something I’ve long believed: when students are taught how to learn, their academic success skyrockets.

Too often, classrooms focus on memorization and content delivery, leaving students to figure out study strategies on their own. Fear is the Mind Killer makes a powerful case for changing that—showing how explicitly teaching learning strategies is a simple yet transformative way to improve student outcomes.

One of the most impactful tools I incorporate into my coaching is metacognition—the ability to think about one’s own thinking, planning, and learning. When students learn to reflect on their study habits, assess what works, and make strategic adjustments, they become more confident, independent learners.

I love guiding students through this process, helping them try new techniques, evaluate their effectiveness, and refine their approach. This often leads to what I call the Aha Moment—that eye-opening realization when a student understands the power of a small change or a new way of thinking about their studies. These moments are game-changers.

Reading Fear is the Mind Killer reaffirmed my commitment to embedding metacognition into my coaching. When students learn how to learn, they don’t just improve their grades—they build skills that will serve them for life.

If you or someone you know is struggling with school, let’s talk. Learning isn’t just about working harder—it’s about working smarter. Ready to unlock your potential? Reach out today! Email me at andrea@andreazians.com
